Basic Web Promotion Tips

To engage in web promotion is to employ methodologies designed to improve a web site’s visibility within a search engine’s rankings.
What it is not is a cure-all designed to provide your site with a top search engine position after five minutes.
Although usually referred to as either an art or a science, web promotion can safely be termed a combination of both due to the many variables which determine its success or failure.

The first step is to ensure that your site conforms to the universally accepted rules set down by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Full W3C compliance ensures that your site’s code is free of errors and does not contain any improperly embedded JavaScript or Flash content.
Furthermore, you should ensure that you site is designed in the most user friendly manner possible, not only to prevent a poor user experience but also make it more search engine friendly.

Step two is to concentrate on your site’s content.
You will undoubtedly have heard the phrase “Content is King” in relation to web promotion.
What this effectively means is that search engines value original, well-written, authoritative content about your site’s chosen topic above all else.
But it does not end here; this content will also need to be formatted correctly, in such a way as to place extra emphasis on your desired keywords without being considered a spam merchant by search engine spiders.

Before writing new content for your site, it would probably be a good idea to carry out a basic keyword analysis to identify the most productive keywords for your own industry.
After all, there is little point in optimising your content for keywords nobody searches for.
Moreover, you should also use your main keywords within each page’s Meta Tags (Title, Description and Keyword Tags), once again being careful not to overuse them and be considered a spammer.

A comprehensive sitemap is another asset for your site’s promotion, since it not only makes your site more navigable for human visitors, but also helps search engines to fully index your site.

Once you have completed and launched your site, the time has arrived to engage in the next step of web promotion; linking.
Linking is another important aspect of successful promotion, with both incoming and outgoing links playing an active part in your promotional efforts.
The golden rule here is to never exchange links with irrelevant sites but to ensure your link partner sites should be related in some way to your own topic or industry.
Linking with spam sites, link farms or free for all links pages will ultimately do your rankings more harm than good.

Remember; don’t try to fool the search engines.
Instead of trying to find shortcuts, focus your attentions on making your site better and playing by the rules.
Successful web promotion takes hard work and patience.
