Successful Link Building Strategies
We all know that link building is an important part of
successful web promotion.
And yet, link builders oftentimes overlook one of the most important aspects
of a successful linking strategy.
”Just where does the incoming link actually
go?”
By obtaining an incoming link you
are effectively placing extra emphasis on the page it
points to.
Not only will visitors clicking on the incoming link be
brought straight to the target page, search engines will
also see that page as more important according to the
number of links pointing at it.
Currently, most link builders
will concentrate their efforts solely on garnering links
for their homepage in spite of the fact that there is
a multitude of reasons to obtain a spread of incoming
links across their entire site.
Whilst your site is relatively
new and underdeveloped, it makes sense to concentrate
your link building efforts towards your homepage since
this will help it to begin ranking in search engine results
pages (SERPs).
There is also a distinct “filter-through” effect,
which means that other pages within your site will benefit
from the extra exposure of your homepage.
If your site
has a number of different sub-categories however, it may
be advisable to optimise every main introductory page
with a series of incoming links, each with its on separate
keyword or phrase.
By using the link texts incorporating the desired keyword/phrase
and optimising the content of each introductory page to
the relevant phrase you are vastly increasing that page’s
overall exposure.
Link building for fun and profit
Another reason to be choosy about where to point incoming
links is revenue.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Which part of your site produces the most return per
visitor?
- Which page contains the most relevant content for
each link building keyword/phrase?
- Do you want visitors to reach a subscription form
for your newsletter?
- Which page contains the most related information you
also want your visitor to see?
Once again it all comes down to relevance to the search
term.
If visitors looking for a particular keyword or key-phrase
land on a less relevant page (such as your homepage) they
are far less likely to stay and explore your site since
they have not yet discovered the information they were
looking for in the first place.
It pays to be careful about
the destination of your links, especially those published
in articles and forums, since these cannot be altered
once they have been published.
Drawing up a careful link building strategy now can save
hours if not days of wasted effort and extra work in the
future.
