Web Site Visitor Tracking - Keyword Analysis is Important

Published: 21st of October 2006

Most webmasters and online business owners know that web site visitor tracking is an important part of effective web promotion.
With this in mind, many novice web designers will put a basic (and in many cases free) hit counter on their site(s).

But are these basic hit counters actually of any promotional use?

In its most rudimentary form, a hit counter will merely record the number of times a page has been loaded by a visiting web browser without gathering any other information at all.
This is fine for personal sites where webmasters merely wish to keep a record of whether their site is getting any traffic at all, but utterly useless for a commercial site competing in the global arena.

The days of merely monitoring the number of clicks to your site are well and truly gone.
If your online enterprise is to be successful in the face of its competitors, you need to gather detailed information about your visitors and their browsing habits.

A simple counter has no web site visitor tracking capabilities and cannot tell you where your visitors are coming from, whether they reach your site through a search engine, what keywords and phrases they are using to find you or any other information which would prove valuable to you in your efforts to promote your web site.

Without a tool to carry out proper keyword analysis, you are effectively flying blind where the search engine promotion of your site is concerned and let’s face it; if you have a commercial web site, your ultimate aim is to sell your products or services as effectively as possible.

So what can you use to gather the required information and analyse it so you know what improvements are required to boost your site’s performance?

1. Your ISP’s Statistics Server
Most hosting packages these days come ready-equipped with a basic statistics tracker which provides basic information about referrers, keywords & phrases used by visitors, screen resolutions and other valuable information.
Although this approach does not provide the sort of in-depth information needed by web sites in heavily competed market sectors, it is usually free as well as sufficient for smaller web sites competing in niche markets.
2. An Online Keyword Analysis Tool
Whilst usually being subject to a monthly or annual subscription fee, these online web site visitor tracking utilities offer a level of detail not usually found in the information gathered by their free counterparts.
Although there are a large number of these services available, there are only a handful offering a cost-effective means of gathering and analysing the required information and then suggesting possible improvements according to its findings.
An excellent example of online keyword analysis can be found by clicking here.

Of course, once you have your web site visitor tracking information, you’ll need to know how to act on it to improve your site’s performance in the search engine listings.

W3C Compliance

Having set the internet's standards since its inception in 1994, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) consists of over 400 members working ceaslessly to ensure the coherent future development of the internet.
W3C Compliance however, is still somewhat of a mythical beast where many less experienced web designers are concerned.
Yet without adhering to W3C standards, any web site has a far lower chance of success.
